PIRATA (2010)

I was biking somewhere in the middle of Bali when I saw a lot of people in traditional clothes on the side of the road. I stopped and found out they were preparing a funeral, which they allowed me to attend.

Funerals are a very important part of Balinese culture. Funeral rites are performed in order to purify the deceased of any earthy impurities, so that the soul may enter the divine world of his or her ancestors. The first step involves burial, where the soul is yet to be purified (pirata). Later, the body will be exhumed and cremated (pitara) for partial purification. Full purification is achieved with subsequent rites at the deceased home.

It was an incredible experience.
